Activating Text to Speech - Chromebook & Windows support guide illustration.

Text to speech is a fantastic tool to use, especially for those with reading difficulties. This page will inform you on how to activate this feature on Chromebooks and Windows PC's. Chrome's one works much easier than the one for Windows as you can probably tell from the videos.

Chromebook

  1. Navigate to the time (bottom right) and click
  2. In this menu click on the 'Accessibility' icon
    If you do not see this then contact IT
  3. Make sure 'Select to Speak' is turned on
  4. Click on the 'Select to Speak' located on the bottom right
  5. Click and Drag your cursor over the text you wish to be read
  6. Use the bar it displays to play/pause/skip/set speed
  7. Click the icon again to disable it

Windows

  1. Open the Narrator. CTRL + Windows + N or Settings - Ease of Access - Narrator
  2. Turn Narrator on
  3. Optional - Press CTRL to stop narrator from immediately reading (it will immediately read every page you go on)
  4. Go to the page you want read
  5. After pressing CTRL you can click anywhere for the narrator to start reading from (alternatively you can use the arrow keys to navigate different lines to read)
  6. Open the narrator again to turn it off
